About Real County Historical Commission

The mission of the Real County Historical Commission is to coordinate the preservation of Real County’s cultural and historic resources as part of the Texas Historical Commission’s statewide plan. It protects, documents, interprets, and acquires prehistoric and historic sites while also promoting local and state history. The Commission collaborates with communities to preserve landmarks, such as the historic courthouse, administers the state historical marker program, stimulates tourism and economic development, safeguards private archaeological sites, assists with landmark nominations, and protects historic sites during public construction. One of the most valuable historic resources is the Cemetery Preservation Program. Cemeteries provide valuable insights into historical events, religions, lifestyles, and genealogical information. The Real County Historical Commission meets quarterly on the third Saturday of February, May, August, and November, with all meetings open to the public. Guests are always welcome.
